Liverpool shocked by Pennant surgery

Jumat, 26 Oktober 2007

LONDON (AFP) - Jermaine Pennant needs surgery on his right leg,
Liverpool football club revealed on Friday, meaning he will be out of
action for 10 weeks.
The winger limped out of the Reds' Champions League defeat at
Besiktas on Wednesday night and the club have now confirmed he has been
carrying a problem for almost the whole of this season. He will go
under the knife this weekend.
Club spokesman Ian Cotton said on the Reds' official website,
www.liverpoolfc.tv: 'For the last eight weeks Jermaine has undergone
Cityintensive treatment at Melwood between matches for the injury. But
following an acute exacerbation of the problem during the game against
Besiktas, it has now been decided he requires surgery.
'We anticipate Jermaine will be out for approximately 10 weeks.'
Liverpool have a big match on Sunday at Anfield with the visit of Premier League leaders Arsenal.

Hargreaves back for United

MANCHESTER, England (AFP) - Manchester United's drive to retain the
Premier League title will be bolstered by Owen Hargreaves returning to
action this weekend, manager Sir Alex Ferguson revealed on Friday.
The England midfielder, who has made only three appearances since
his 18-million-pound summer move from Bayern Munich, has recovered from
an injection he was given to deal with a bout of tendinitis in his
right knee.
As a result, he will be in the squad that will face Middlesbrough
on Saturday and -- with Paul Scholes and Michael Carrick both sidelined
-- looks set to partner Brazilian teenager Anderson in the centre of
midfield.
'Owen is fit to start tomorrow,' Ferguson said. 'It's been
frustrating for him, missing games is not what he came here for. He's
come here for a big fee and he must be a bit disappointed with the way
things have gone.
'But it is a long season and he is back now which is terrific news
for us because it gives us a better chance of doing well.'
Scholes hurt his knee in training on the eve of Wednesday's
Champions League win over Dynamo Kiev and a scan to assess the problem
has proved inconclusive.
After an uncertain start to his United career, Anderson has
suddenly come good in his last two matches and Ferguson admitted he was
delighted with the speed with which the 19-year-old has established
himself.
'He is only 19 but he has settled well but he has shown fantastic
qualities. Everyone has been very, very pleased with his performances
in the last two games.
'The thing that's really impressed us has been his knowledge of
the game. I noticed the other night he was instructing players around
him which is a nice sign to see in a young player of 19 considering his
English isn't perfect.'
Ferguson also revealed that club captain Gary Neville and Carrick
could both be fit for the crunch showdown with Arsenal at the Emirates
Stadium on November 3.
Neville has not played at all this season with calf and thigh
problems, while Carrick is currently nursing a dislocated elbow
sustained in the victory over Roma at Old Trafford earlier this month.
Ferguson said: 'Neville has been doing a lot of training. He just
needs a game which we are trying to arrange for him. He should be fit
in seven days.
'Michael Carrick goes for a scan on Monday. If he gets the
all-clear to start training, he will be available for Arsenal.'
Louis Saha is again unlikely to figure against Boro but Patrice
Evra should be involved despite pulling out of the Kiev win with a calf
strain sustained in the warm-up.
Ferguson, meanwhile, has backed sacked Tottenham manager Martin
Jol to make an early return to the game following the Dutchman's
dismissal at White Hart Lane this week.
Jol was once interviewed by Ferguson for the assistant manager's
position at Old Trafford and the United manager is convinced he has
been treated harshly.
Ferguson added: 'I don't know the ins and outs of it but I do know
there has been a drip drip effect since the start of the season when
there was talk that Spurs had met with the Seville manager.
'I don't know if that happened or not but there was so much talk
about his future that you are almost relieved for him.
'And I say that knowing his qualities. He has great integrity and
is a decent man and did well in Holland with hardly any resources. And
that gives him a cv that will get him a job almost anywhere.'

FIFA supports Brazil as sole candidate for world cup 2014

PARIS (AFP) - International football's governing body, FIFA,

Liverpool's Carragher well aware of huge Euro task

LONDON (AFP) - Liverpool's Jamie Carragher believes last year's
Champions League finalists can return from the brink after losing to
Besiktas midweek, the defender said Thursday.
The five-time European Cup winners are propping up group A and
facing 'relegation' to the second-tier UEFA Cup competition after
Wednesday's 2-1 defeat in Istanbul, where they beat AC Milan 3-2 two
years ago to win the Champions League.
But Carragher, who was part of the earlier 1-0 defeat at home to
Marseille and the 10-man 1-1 away draw with Porto, remains defiant.
'I do not accept that there was much wrong with our performance in
Istanbul, we were just unlucky in their penalty box,' he said after 28
attempts on goal and only Steven Gerrard's late header hitting the back
of the net.
'We feel we did not get what we deserved. But look back to 2005
and the group stages. We did not do particularly well then, but ended
up winning it.
'Now we must show that sort of spirit. We went to the last group
game then and got ourselves out of it. So it looks like we are going to
have to do the same again.'
In 2005, Liverpool managed to lose two group games against Monaco
and Olympiakos and claim a draw with Deportivo la Coruna.
All seemed lost ahead of the final home game with Olympiakos, but
a dramatic fight-back with goals from Florent Sinama-Pongolle, Neil
Mellor and Gerrard produced an historic comeback.
They ended up winning the trophy that season, and Carragher admits
that it will take a similar level of commitment to see Liverpool
through.
Liverpool now have the return with Besiktas in a fortnight,
followed by Porto at Anfield and the last group grame in Marseille in
December.
'We are not thinking about the UEFA Cup, we are still going for it
in the Champions League. Win three games and we are through,' Carragher
said.
'We did it once before and we can do it again. It could well go right to the wire of that last game in Marseille.'

Shevchenko affected by Chelsea struggles, says Grant

LONDON (AFP) - Avram Grant admits Andriy Shevchenko is struggling to recover from the shock of being benched by Jose Mourinho.
Shevchenko has failed to live up to his 30 million pounds price
tag since his move from AC Milan last year and Mourinho quickly lost
patience with the Ukraine striker.
One of Grant's main roles when he joined Chelsea as director of
football in pre-season was to bring the best out of Shevchenko, but
Mourinho was unimpressed by his form and opted to continue leaving him
out.
Mourinho has since departed and Grant has taken over, but
Shevchenko is still stuck on the sidelines at Stamford Bridge.
The 31-year-old has been reduced to a bit part role, scoring only
once this season and making occasional cameo appearances.
Grant believes his nightmare spell at the club may well have taken
its toll on Shevchenko's mental and physical well-being and therefore
affected his performances.
The Israeli denied Chelsea have appointed former British Olympic
sprinter Darren Campbell to help Shevchenko regain his spark butKit
insisted the club have been trying to help.
'I prefer only to say that he was not at his best from the
beginning of the year but there are many reasons for this,' Grant said.
'You never know if it is because of the mental side that the
player doesn't look so good in the physical side, or if it has come
from the physical side. Sometimes it is both.
'We are talking about professional players. They need to handle everything. We are not baby-sitters of the players.
'We tried to help him as we try to help other players. But the
players feel they need to help themselves. We have a big squad and we
will need everybody, including Andriy Shevchenko.'
Grant still believes Shevchenko had recapture the form that made him the most feared striker in Europe.
'Andriy was a very good player and he is still a very good player, even if he is not playing now,' he said.
'I know from my experience there are some periods when players are
not at their best, but it doesn't mean they are finished.
'Some players who are not in the team can come back well. That is
what it will be with Andriy. He is a very good player with a good
attitude.'
Another player who has struggled recently is Shaun Wright-Phillips
and the coach insists he cannot give any guarantees about his future at
Chelsea.

Grant left Wright-Phillips out of his squad for the Schalke match,
fuelling reports that the England winger was unhappy at Stamford Bridge.
Manchester City manager Sven Goran Eriksson, whose side face
Chelsea on Saturday, has made it clear he would love to bring

Wright-Phillips back to Eastlands if the Blues decide to sell him.
Grant acknowledges Wright-Phillips is bound to be unhappy that he
is not playing but, while he has no immediate intention to sell him,
there is no way he can say for certain he will get back into the team.
'Sometimes during the season players are not happy if they are not
playing,' Grant said. 'That is reasonable to me but any player at
Chelsea needs to be ready.
'That is why they are in the squad and why we pay them wages. It
is not personal against anyone. I am thinking about the team.
'I think Shaun is professional. He wants to play. He has to beFifa 21 kit update
ready for next game. That is what I ask of the other players.
'We have 25 players in the squad, most of them are internationals and we can only play 11.'
Grant has been in charge for seven matches now, giving him enough
time to get a feel for what needs improving in his squad.
He is adamant he will only make minimal changes in the January transfer window.
'I am very happy with the squad. Even if we changed it will be
only five or 10 percent. Maybe we will but I'm not thinking about it at
the moment.
'We feel good with our squad. If we find one or two players who can make us better we will take them.'
Grant should have Michael Ballack back by the time the transfer
window opens. The Germany midfielder has been sidelined with ankle
injury but Grant expects him to be back within two months.
'In one or two months he will be ready for us. It is important
because he is a great player and a match winner,' said Grant.
'I hope everything will go well because in the past he had some problems.'

Totti uncertain for AC Milan clash

ROME (AFP) - Injured Roma captain and striker Francesco Totti
is in doubt for the Serie A match against AC Milan this weekend, coach
Luciano Spalletti said Friday.
'It will be difficult for Totti to take the field against Milan on
Sunday, and there is also some doubt about (Rodrigo) Taddei,' Spalletti
told Italian agency ANSA.
Totti picked up an ankle knock in Roma's 2-1 Champions League win
over Sporting Lisbon in midweek, which followed their 4-4 draw against
Napoli in the Serie A last Saturday.

That result left Roma in fourth, and Spalletti believes Milan,
despite sitting in 11th place, are a formidable challenge.
'Milan are a great team, a 0-0 draw, 1-1, wouldn't be bad, but nothing is guaranteed.'
Milan thumped Shakhtar Donetsk 4-1 midweek in the Champions League
but have made a slow start to the season and are already 10 points
behind their arch rivals Inter.

David Beckham

Kamis, 12 Juli 2007

LOS ANGELES (TICKER) -- Los Angeles Galaxy insist their presentation ceremony for former England captain David Beckham on Friday will be a low-key affair.

Beckham is due to be paraded as a Galaxy player for the first time in front of an invited audience of season-ticket holders and sponsors' guests in a 30-minute ceremony at the Home Depot Center.

The 32-year-old will take to a stage at the 27,000-capacity stadium alongside head coach Frank Yallop, general manager Alexi Lalas, Major League Soccer commissioner Dan Garber and Tim Leiweke of Galaxy owners AEG.

ll five will address the crowd after which former Manchester United and Real Madrid star Beckham will be handed his Galaxy jersey and conduct media interviews.

The promised formal approach is a far cry from the glitz and glamor expected in American sport, particularly so close to Hollywood, but Galaxy officials say they do not want the ceremony to overshadow a season still in progress.

So far this campaign, the club has won only three times in 12 MLS games and were this week knocked out of the U.S. Open Cup by the semi-professional Richmond Kickers, a team operating two divisions beneath the Galaxy.

With a high-profile friendly tournament coming up next week involving Chelsea, Korean side Suwon Bluewings and Mexico's Tigres UANL, Beckham's new employers want to portray a club that means business.

'It's meant to be low key,' said a Galaxy spokesman. 'We've got games coming up and an important tournament next week. We don't want players getting distracted or being prevented from training.'

While Beckham and his new teammates knuckle down, Major League Soccer has launched a 30-second television commercial to publicize the England midfielder's expected Galaxy debut against Chelsea on Saturday, July 21.

Made to promote the live television broadcast of the game on national cable sports network ESPN, the advert is set to the Beatles' song 'Hello Goodbye' and shows Beckham leaving Madrid as fans in the Spanish capital either look forlorn or protest at his departure.

A young girl is shown crying, as is a woman reading a newspaper, while there is a shot of drinkers in an English pub shaking their heads in disbelief.

Then Beckham appears in the new all-white Galaxy kit as he walks up a players' tunnel and the message 'Say hello, America' followed by 'Beckham arrives' brings the commercial to an end.

The new kit has blue and gold trim and a new Galaxy crest which features a 'Quasar' with two embroidered stars representing their two MLS Cup championships.

'We wanted a classic and clean look that would stand the test of time, something that generations of players and fans would wear with pride on and off the field,' Lalas said. 'We strived to create a jersey with an eye to the future and a nod to the past. 'A Quasar is the heart of a galaxy and generates incredible light and energy. Our crest shows a Quasar shining brightly in a deep blue California sky. It illuminates the initials 'LA', used globally to refer to our City of Angels. The color gold honors the Galaxy's proud history and tradition in the Golden State.'
